WordPress is a free, open-source content management system (CMS): software that lets you build and manage a website without having to code. Open source means that the source code is freely available and is continuously developed by a global community. You write text, upload photos, and design pages through an admin interface in your browser, much like you would in a word processor. WordPress runs on your own hosting package and is by far the most widely used website system in the world: roughly four out of ten websites run on it, ranging from personal blogs to the sites of major brands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A WordPress site consists of three layers that you can customize independently. The core is WordPress itself: the system that stores your content in a database (the repository for all your text and settings) and displays pages to visitors. What do you use WordPress for?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You can build virtually any type of website with WordPress, and for most types, it\u2019s an excellent choice. A business site with a handful of pages, a blog or news site, a portfolio, and\u2014with the WooCommerce plugin\u2014a full-fledged online store: this is where WordPress really shines, and here you can take full advantage of the vast selection of themes, plugins, and Dutch-language support. Member-only sites, course platforms, and multilingual sites are also well within the realm of possibility, though they do require more setup work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s also fair to point out when WordPress isn\u2019t the logical choice. If you just need a simple one-page site that never changes, a website builder like Squarespace or Wix will get you up and running faster. And if you\u2019re building a web application with a lot of custom logic, a developer is more likely to choose a framework than a CMS. For everything in between\u2014which makes up the vast majority of all websites\u2014WordPress is the safe, standard choice: not because it\u2019s trendy, but because you\u2019re never stuck. You can always find a plugin, a solution, or a specialist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What You Can Do Yourself and How Much It Costs<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The software is free; you pay for hosting (the server space subscription that powers your site) and a domain name, which together start at just a few euros per month. Optionally, you can add a paid theme or premium plugins. Even without technical knowledge, you can get surprisingly far on your own: installing WordPress through your hosting control panel, choosing a theme, filling pages with the block editor, and adding a form are all just a matter of clicking and typing.
